Chapter 8 - The House Without Doors

David changed the locks after Maya visited Elena.
He claimed it was for security.
Maya’s fingerprint no longer opened the exterior doors unless the household system recognized her scheduled access.
Her car keys disappeared.
Her business accounts began experiencing delays.
Clients received emails saying Maya was taking medical leave.
She had written none of them.
David denied involvement.
Rebecca suggested Maya was becoming forgetful.
Then David hired a new assistant for Maya’s design studio.
The assistant reported every appointment directly to him.
Maya’s world became smaller.
She slept with her phone beneath her pillow.
She kept emergency cash inside a shoe.
She created copies of the loan documents and mailed them to a post office box Elena had once used for charitable work.
Maya still did not use the emergency phrase.
Part of her feared Elena would arrive with police and cause David to retaliate before she could leave safely.
Another part remained ashamed.
The bruises made sense to Maya when she was alone with them.
In daylight, David’s apologies made her question herself.
He became affectionate whenever she withdrew.
He promised therapy.
He blamed Rebecca.
Then Rebecca blamed Maya.
One evening, David arrived carrying the necklace Maya had worn at their wedding.
“I want things to be normal again.”
“Normal before or after you forged my signature?”
His expression hardened.
“I told you the loan will be repaid.”
“The bank sent a default notice.”
“It’s temporary.”
“If it defaults, I lose my father’s house.”
David placed the necklace down.
“You care more about a dead man’s house than your living husband.”
Maya stood.
“Do not use my father against me.”
David blocked the doorway.
“You will sign the confirmation.”
“No.”
His hand rose.
Then stopped.
Maya looked at it.
David lowered his arm slowly.
“You see what you make me become?”
The sentence removed the last piece of doubt.
Maya had not made him violent.
She had only stopped making violence convenient.
That night, she activated an old tablet and reviewed security footage from the house.
David had forgotten the interior system still backed up motion clips.
One video showed him removing her passport.
Another showed Rebecca placing the forged bank documents inside a locked cabinet.
A third recorded David practicing Maya’s signature.
Maya copied everything.
Then she sent a short message to Elena.
I may need the blue folder soon.
Elena responded with only two words.
May you like
I’m ready.
👉 Maya had finally warned her mother, but David was already arranging a public dinner where he intended to force her signature in front of the one person he believed would keep the peace.
