Chapter 6 - The Mother Maya No Longer Trusted

Maya drove to Elena’s house the following morning.

She remained in the car for twenty minutes.

Her cheek was unmarked that day.

Her wrist was not.

She had covered the bruise with a wide bracelet.

Elena opened the front door before Maya knocked.

“You’ve been sitting outside long enough for the neighbors to worry.”

Maya almost smiled.

Inside, the house smelled like coffee and cinnamon.

It felt unchanged.

That made speaking harder.

Elena placed two cups on the table.

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

“Maya.”

“I needed to see you.”

Elena waited.

Maya had always admired her mother’s patience.

Now it felt unbearable.

“Do you think I made a mistake marrying David?”

Elena did not answer immediately.

“I think David changed after he received power.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“I think you are unhappy.”

Maya looked down.

Elena reached for her hand.

Maya pulled away too quickly.

The bracelet shifted.

The bruise became visible.

Elena’s face changed.

“Did he do that?”

Maya covered it.

“It was an argument.”

“Did David touch you?”

“He grabbed me.”

Elena rose.

Maya stood too.

“This is why I didn’t tell you.”

“Because I stood up?”

“Because you’ll turn it into a disaster.”

Elena stared at her daughter.

“It is already a disaster if you are hiding bruises.”

“You’ll call the police.”

“Yes.”

“You’ll tell everyone.”

“I will tell whoever is needed to keep you safe.”

Maya heard the certainty in her voice and panicked.

David had spent months telling her Elena cared more about winning than listening.

Maya believed leaving required a complete plan.

Elena wanted immediate action.

They argued.

Maya accused her mother of never respecting her choices.

Elena accused Maya of protecting David.

The conversation ended with Maya walking out.

Before she left, Elena said, “You may be angry with me. You may refuse my help. But I need you to hear one thing.”

Maya paused at the door.

“If you call me from anywhere and say, ‘I need the blue folder,’ I will understand you are in danger. I will not argue. I will not ask questions. I will come.”

Maya did not answer.

She drove home.

That night, David searched her car and discovered she had visited Elena.

He demanded to know what she revealed.

“Nothing,” Maya said.

He studied her for a long time.

Then he smiled.

“Good.”

But Rebecca had already decided Elena needed to be controlled.

👉 Maya left her mother’s house feeling misunderstood, while Elena quietly began preparing for the emergency call she feared would eventually come.
