Investigators uncovered a network of fraudulent borrowing.
David had used Maya’s identity to guarantee more than twelve million dollars in loans.
Some funded company expansion.
Others paid personal debts Rebecca had accumulated after her husband’s death.
One loan financed a condominium registered to Rebecca.
Another paid the legal fees for David’s failed hotel project.
Maya’s passport, tax records and digital signature had been copied repeatedly.
The documents created the appearance that she was an active financial partner.
If the company collapsed, creditors could pursue her personal assets.
David had spent months building a story in which Maya was responsible.
His emails described her as the person managing “family collateral.”
Meeting notes claimed she had insisted on risky borrowing.
The remote video of the fake notarization had been deleted from the bank’s main file.
But a backup remained on a compliance server.
The woman in the video wore sunglasses and kept her face partly turned.
Her voice sounded familiar.
Maya watched the recording twice.
It was Rebecca.
David’s mother had impersonated her.
Rebecca had used Maya’s passport image during the identity check.
David answered security questions from outside the camera frame.
The notary approved the session.
Maya felt physically ill.
Rebecca had not merely defended the fraud afterward.
She had performed it.
Police obtained a search warrant for Rebecca’s home.
They found copies of Maya’s identification, signature samples and detailed instructions for the video call.
They also found a folder labeled EXIT STRATEGY.
Inside was a prepared divorce narrative.
It accused Maya of secretly borrowing money and hiding the debt from David.
The folder contained photographs of Maya’s bruises.
Rebecca intended to claim Maya had injured herself during emotional outbursts caused by financial pressure.
Elena read the documents beside her daughter.
“They planned to use the injuries as proof against you.”
Maya nodded.
“That’s why she always told me not to seek treatment.”
Medical records would have documented patterns inconsistent with self-inflicted harm.
Rebecca had known that.
David’s assault in the restaurant destroyed the plan.
Public witnesses confirmed his behavior.
The cameras recorded Rebecca encouraging him.
The stolen agreement established motive.
Prosecutors added identity theft, fraud, conspiracy and coercion to the investigation.
Rebecca was arrested.
She entered court wearing the same pearls from the restaurant.
She refused to look at Maya.
David’s attorney immediately blamed Rebecca.
Rebecca’s attorney blamed David.
The family that demanded loyalty began turning on itself.
