Chapter 7 - Rebecca’s Offer

Rebecca visited Elena alone.

She arrived carrying expensive flowers and a bottle of wine.

Elena did not invite her to sit.

Rebecca looked around the modest but elegant home.

“You’ve maintained the place beautifully.”

“What do you want?”

Rebecca placed the flowers on a table.

“Our children are having difficulties.”

“Your son is hurting my daughter.”

Rebecca’s eyes narrowed.

“Maya exaggerates when she is emotional.”

“I saw the bruise.”

“Couples grab each other during arguments.”

Elena became very still.

“Did Maya grab David?”

“That is not the point.”

“It is exactly the point.”

Rebecca sighed.

“We both understand how quickly rumors destroy families.”

“Your concern is not Maya.”

“My concern is everyone.”

Rebecca opened her handbag and removed an envelope.

Inside was a check.

Elena did not touch it.

“What is that?”

“A contribution toward the restoration of your community arts center.”

Elena served on its board.

The center had struggled to raise money for repairs.

Rebecca continued.

“David’s company would be happy to sponsor the entire project.”

“In exchange for what?”

“Help Maya calm down.”

“You want me to persuade my daughter to accept being assaulted.”

“I want you to discourage her from using words like assaulted.”

Elena picked up her phone and placed it face down on the table.

The recording had already started.

Rebecca did not notice.

“There is also a financial misunderstanding involving the Santa Barbara property,” she said.

“My late husband’s house.”

“Maya agreed to use it.”

“No, she did not.”

Rebecca’s composure cracked.

“You cannot prove that.”

Elena looked at the check again.

“Is this a donation or payment for silence?”

“It is an opportunity to protect your daughter’s future.”

“Her future with the man hurting her?”

“Divorce would humiliate everyone.”

Elena finally understood why Rebecca believed she would cooperate.

Rebecca assumed every mother valued reputation the way she did.

Elena pushed the check back.

“Get out.”

Rebecca rose.

“You will regret turning this into a public matter.”

Elena lifted the flowers and placed them in Rebecca’s arms.

“The next time your son touches Maya, the public will be the smallest thing he needs to fear.”

Rebecca left.

Elena saved the recording in three places.

Then she contacted an attorney and a domestic violence advocate.

She did not call Maya.

Not yet.

She knew forcing her daughter would drive her deeper into David’s control.

Instead, Elena prepared to move the moment Maya used the words they had agreed upon.

👉 Rebecca believed she had intimidated Elena into silence, never realizing her attempted bribe had become the first recorded evidence of a larger conspiracy.
