Chapter 15 - The House David Couldn’t Take
David had signed transfer instructions before the dinner.
The documents directed the Santa Barbara property into a holding company controlled by Rebecca.
They were scheduled to process automatically if Maya signed the retroactive consent.
The company’s registered address belonged to the attorney who arranged the false notarization.
Investigators arrested him.
He admitted David had paid him to create documents that could survive a divorce challenge.
The plan was simple.
Use Maya’s house as collateral.
Move it into Rebecca’s company.
Allow the company to default.
Purchase the property through another family entity at a reduced price.
Maya would lose the house.
David’s family would keep it.
The cruelty of the plan hurt Maya more than the financial value.
Her father had renovated the house himself.
Every summer, Maya had painted beside him on the back porch.
After he died, Elena preserved the property because she believed Maya might one day need a place that belonged only to her.
David understood that history.
He used it anyway.
Maya traveled to Santa Barbara with Elena after the transfer was permanently blocked.
The house had been empty for years, but Elena still kept it clean.
Maya walked through the rooms slowly.
Her childhood height marks remained beside the pantry.
Her father’s old workbench stood in the garage.
Maya placed one hand against the kitchen wall and began to cry.
“I almost let them take this.”
Elena stood behind her.
“No. They almost stole it.”
“I stayed too long.”
“You survived long enough to leave with the truth.”
Maya looked toward the ocean.
“What am I supposed to do with the house now?”
“Whatever you choose.”
For the first time, the answer contained no instruction.
No expectation.
No concern about reputation.
Only choice.
Maya decided not to sell.
She also decided she could not return to the house she shared with David.
Her attorney filed for divorce.
The petition included domestic violence, financial fraud and coercive control.
David requested a private settlement.
He offered to admit the affair and relinquish the marital home if Maya asked prosecutors to reduce the charges.
Maya rejected the offer.
He sent another message.
