Chapter 2 - The Husband Everyone Admired
Three years earlier, David appeared to be the safest man Maya had ever known.
He was charming without being loud.
Successful without constantly discussing money.
At least, that was how he behaved when they met.
Maya worked as an interior designer for restaurants and boutique hotels. David managed expansion projects for his family’s hospitality company.
They met during the renovation of a historic hotel.
David admired her ability to enter a neglected room and imagine what it could become.
“You see value before anyone else does,” he told her.
Maya fell in love slowly.
Elena remained cautious.
She had raised Maya alone after Maya’s father died. Their life had been comfortable but modest, built through discipline rather than luxury.
David’s family lived differently.
Rebecca treated every dinner as a performance. She spoke constantly about family reputation, proper behavior and the importance of keeping private problems away from outsiders.
During Maya and David’s engagement dinner, Rebecca raised her glass.
“In our family, loyalty comes before personal feelings.”
Maya thought the comment was strange.
David squeezed her hand beneath the table.
“Don’t worry. She gives speeches about everything.”
After the wedding, Maya moved into David’s house.
At first, he remained affectionate.
He brought coffee to her studio.
He asked about her projects.
He told friends that Maya was the reason every room felt like home.
Rebecca visited almost daily.
She rearranged cabinets.
Criticized Maya’s clothes.
Corrected the household staff.
Whenever Maya objected, David asked her to be patient.
“She lost Dad,” he said. “The family company is all she has left.”
Maya tried.
She invited Rebecca to dinner.
Included her in holidays.
Ignored the insults disguised as advice.
Then David accepted control of the company’s newest division.
The promotion changed the way he spoke to Maya.
He stopped asking for her opinion.
He began issuing instructions.
He expected her to cancel work whenever he needed her beside him at an event.
“You represent me now,” he said.
Maya laughed at first.
“I thought I represented myself.”
David did not laugh with her.
Within months, the attentive man from the hotel renovation disappeared.
In his place stood someone who believed love gave him authority.
And Rebecca encouraged every change.
“You are finally becoming the man your father wanted,” she told him.
Maya heard the approval in her voice.
She also heard the warning beneath it.
