Chapter 10 - The Document Beneath the Plate

Rebecca arrived first.
She wore pearls and greeted Elena with a kiss on the cheek.
The performance was perfect.
To nearby guests, they appeared to be two elegant families gathering for dinner.
Maya sat between David and Elena.
The table was crowded with wineglasses, silverware and white flowers.
David ordered for Maya without asking.
Rebecca began speaking about forgiveness.
“Marriage survives when women stop keeping score.”
Elena looked at her.
“Marriage survives when no one is afraid.”
David smiled tightly.
“We agreed not to attack each other.”
“No,” Elena said. “You agreed to stop attacking Maya.”
The waiter paused briefly beside the table.
His eyes moved toward the camera above them.
Dinner continued.
Rebecca presented the consent agreement after the main course.
She removed it from beneath her plate.
The pages contained handwritten notes along the margins.
Maya recognized Rebecca’s writing.
Have M sign before bank review.
If she refuses, use medical narrative.
Make Elena understand scandal risk.
There it was.
The evidence Maya needed.
David placed a pen beside her hand.
“Sign.”
Maya picked up the document.
She folded it once and slipped it into her purse.
Rebecca’s face changed.
“What are you doing?”
“Keeping evidence.”
David’s fingers closed around Maya’s wrist beneath the table.
“Put it back.”
Elena saw the movement.
Maya remained calm.
“You forged my signature.”
A couple at the next table turned slightly.
David lowered his voice.
“Do not do this here.”
“You chose here.”
Rebecca leaned forward.
“Maya, your mother understands that public accusations will damage everyone.”
Elena took out her phone.
David noticed.
He released Maya’s wrist.
For several seconds, Maya believed they might escape without violence.
Then Madison—one of David’s company attorneys—called his phone.
David answered.
His face changed.
The bank had received the fraud complaint.
The loan was frozen.
The company’s board had opened an investigation.
He looked at Maya.
“You reported me.”
“I protected my property.”
David reached for her purse.
Maya held it against her body.
Elena stood.
“We’re leaving.”
Rebecca blocked Maya’s path with her chair.
“No one leaves until she signs.”
Maya pulled the champagne napkin from her lap.
She placed it beneath her plate.
Elena immediately dialed emergency services.
David saw the screen.

His control shattered.
👉 The napkin beneath the plate activated the safety plan, but David attacked before Elena could finish giving the dispatcher the restaurant’s address.
