Chapter 16 - The Mother Who Chose Reputation
Rebecca accepted a meeting with prosecutors.
She offered to testify against David in exchange for avoiding prison.
She claimed her son controlled every decision.
Then investigators played the recording from Elena’s home.
Rebecca’s voice was calm.
Discourage Maya from using words like assaulted.
They showed the false notarization video.
Rebecca could not blame David for wearing Maya’s glasses, using her passport and signing into the bank system.
They displayed the EXIT STRATEGY folder found in her closet.
Every page contained her handwriting.
Rebecca finally stopped denying her role.
But she continued defending her motive.
“I was protecting the company my husband built.”
The prosecutor asked, “From whom?”
“From Maya.”
“What had Maya done?”
“She was preparing to leave David.”
“Because he was abusing her?”
Rebecca looked away.
“She could have destroyed the family.”
The prosecutor leaned forward.
“You believed the victim leaving would destroy the family, but not the violence or fraud?”
Rebecca had no answer.
Elena attended Rebecca’s sentencing hearing months later.
She sat beside Maya.
Rebecca addressed the court.
She apologized to her son.
She apologized to the company employees.
She apologized to the family name.
She did not initially apologize to Maya.
The judge noticed.
“Mrs. Rebecca, the woman seated behind the prosecutor was assaulted, impersonated and financially exploited. Do you have anything to say to her?”
Rebecca turned.
For the first time, she looked directly at Maya without superiority.
“I believed you would leave eventually,” she said. “I thought if I made you afraid enough, you would stay quiet.”
Maya waited.
Rebecca’s voice weakened.
“I was wrong.”
“You were cruel,” Maya answered.
Rebecca lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
Maya did not forgive her.
Not in that courtroom.
Not because Rebecca had finally run out of lies.
Rebecca pleaded guilty to fraud, identity theft, conspiracy, witness intimidation and aiding coercion.
Her sentence included prison, restitution and a permanent order prohibiting contact with Maya.
Her pearls, luxury condominium and investment accounts were seized to repay losses.
The reputation she valued above Maya’s safety became permanently attached to the public court record.
David refused to plead guilty.
He still believed a jury might accept his version.
Maya chose to testify.
Not from the safety of a recorded statement.
