Chapter 3 - The Child Celeste Recognized

At the restaurant, officers separated every witness.

Victor sat handcuffed beside the kitchen entrance.

Celeste remained at the table, insisting she was the victim of a misunderstanding.

“This is insane,” she said. “A homeless child appears, makes an accusation, and suddenly my husband treats me like a criminal?”

Detective Quinn placed the vial inside an evidence bag.

“The laboratory will decide whether the accusation is insane.”

Adrian barely heard them.

He was watching Noah.

The boy sat wrapped in a restaurant tablecloth because his clothes were soaked from the rain. A chef had placed soup in front of him, but Noah had not touched it.

“Are you hurt?” Adrian asked.

Noah shook his head.

“What’s your name?”

“Noah.”

“Where are your parents?”

Noah stared down at the table.

“My mom is gone.”

The answer struck Adrian harder than he expected.

Celeste stepped closer.

“We should let social services handle this. He clearly needs professional care.”

Noah recoiled.

His hand immediately covered his pocket.

Adrian noticed.

“So did you,” Adrian said quietly.

Celeste blinked.

“What?”

“You recognized him when he entered.”

“I recognized a disruption.”

“No. You recognized him.”

Her expression tightened.

Detective Quinn turned toward her.

“Have you met the child before?”

“Of course not.”

Noah slowly reached into his pocket.

Celeste lunged.

“Don’t let him touch anything!”

The room went silent.

Noah pulled out a tarnished silver locket.

Adrian stopped breathing.

A tiny blue stone was set into the front.

He had purchased that locket thirty-two years earlier for his daughter’s seventh birthday.

Only one existed.

His voice cracked.

“Where did you get that?”

“My mom gave it to me.”

“What was your mother’s name?”

Noah looked at Celeste, then back at Adrian.

“Lily Bennett.”

Adrian gripped the edge of the table.

His daughter’s name had once been Lily Vale.

Celeste’s confidence vanished.

Adrian had been told Lily disappeared overseas eleven years ago after stealing millions from his company.

Now a six-year-old boy was sitting before him wearing her locket.

And Celeste was trying desperately to silence him.

👉 Adrian had spent eleven years believing his daughter betrayed him—but Noah’s next words would reveal that Lily had never stopped trying to come home.
