Chapter 17 - What Lily Endured
Martin entered the courtroom in prison clothing.
He looked older than he had weeks earlier.
He admitted forging the bank records.
He admitted blocking Lily’s calls.
He admitted advising Adrian to believe she had fled with stolen money.
“Why?” the prosecutor asked.
“Celeste had proof I was embezzling from another client. She offered protection and money.”
“Did you know Graham intended to harm Lily and Daniel?”
“I knew they were being followed.”
“Did you know about the crash?”
“Afterward.”
Martin revealed that Lily contacted him from the hospital.
She begged him to tell Adrian she was alive.
Instead, Martin told her Adrian wanted her arrested.
Lily left the hospital before Celeste could find her.
For years, she moved between low-paying jobs under Daniel’s surname.
She avoided banks and official records to protect Noah.
She repeatedly mailed evidence to Adrian.
Martin intercepted most of it.
Adrian sat motionless as each failure was described.
Lily had lived twenty minutes from one of his company branches for nearly a year.
She had watched him give a televised speech about family loyalty while she and Noah slept in a rented room without heat.
Martin’s voice cracked.
“She never stopped believing he would eventually learn the truth.”
Celeste’s attorney attacked Martin’s credibility.
“You are a confessed liar seeking a lighter sentence.”
“Yes.”
“So why should anyone believe you now?”
“Because the documents prove every word.”
The prosecution displayed the intercepted letters found in Martin’s storage unit.
Dozens of them.
Birthday cards Lily had written to Adrian but never sent after Martin convinced her he hated her.
Photographs of Noah as a baby.
A note reading:
Dad, he has your eyes when he’s stubborn.
Adrian could no longer remain composed.
The judge called a recess.
In the hallway, Noah approached him.
“Are you crying because Mom was mad at you?”
Adrian knelt.
“I’m crying because she still loved me when I did not deserve it.”
Noah touched his shoulder.
“She said people can be wrong and still come home.”
Those had been Lily’s words.
The trial resumed.
The jury deliberated for two days.
Then the foreperson announced they had reached a verdict.
Celeste stood.
