Chapter 11 - The Wall behind Lily’s Portrait

Vale Tower opened at seven each morning.
At six twenty, Celeste entered using her executive access card.
Her attorney had advised her not to leave home.
She ignored him.
She knew Lily’s habits.
Years earlier, Lily had helped design the company’s employee heritage gallery. Her portrait still hung on the forty-second floor, despite Celeste’s repeated attempts to remove it.
Police raced toward the building.
Celeste reached the gallery first.
She tore Lily’s portrait from the wall.
Behind it was a recessed panel.
Inside lay a leather-bound ledger.
Celeste laughed with relief.
Then the lights came on.
Elias stood at the far end of the gallery.
“You should put that down.”
Celeste held the ledger against her chest.
“You work for my husband, not the police.”
“I work for the man you tried to kill.”
She stepped toward the emergency stairwell.
Elias blocked her path without touching her.
“You cannot leave with evidence.”
Celeste pulled a small canister from her purse and sprayed him in the eyes.
He staggered.
She ran.
Adrian and Quinn exited the elevator as Celeste reached the stairwell door.
For one moment, husband and wife faced each other beneath Lily’s fallen portrait.
“Give me the ledger,” Adrian said.
Celeste’s eyes were wild.
“You would throw away twenty years because a dead girl wrote letters?”
“She was my daughter.”
“She was weak.”
“No. She survived everything you sent after her.”
Celeste backed toward the stairs.
“She should have stayed gone.”
Adrian’s voice became quiet.
“And Noah?”
“He should never have entered that restaurant.”
Quinn’s body camera recorded every word.
Celeste realized too late.
She hurled the ledger down the stairwell and reached for the fire alarm.
Quinn caught her wrist.
Celeste fought, kicking and twisting, until two officers restrained her.
The ledger landed one floor below, its binding cracked but pages intact.
It contained signatures connecting Celeste, Graham, Martin, and three company executives to the stolen funds.
It also included a payment dated two days before Daniel Bennett’s fatal crash.
The payment description read:
Transportation correction.
Adrian looked at Celeste as officers handcuffed her.
“You called my daughter weak.”
He picked up Lily’s portrait.
“She was the strongest person in this family.”
Yet even with the ledger recovered, one question remained.
Why had Celeste waited eleven years to kill Adrian?
