Chapter 18 - The Verdict

“On the charge of attempted murder in the first degree, we find the defendant guilty.”

Celeste’s face emptied.

“On the charge of conspiracy to commit murder, guilty.”

“On the charge of financial fraud, guilty.”

“On the charge of obstruction of justice, guilty.”

Each verdict landed like a door closing.

Celeste gripped the defense table.

Her attorney whispered for her to remain calm.

She turned toward Adrian.

“This is your fault,” she said loudly. “You brought that child into our lives.”

The judge ordered her to be silent.

Celeste pointed toward Noah’s protected seating area.

“He ruined everything!”

Adrian stood.

“No. He saved everything.”

Bailiffs restrained Celeste when she tried to move toward him.

She was sentenced weeks later to life in prison with the possibility of parole only after decades served.

Graham received a lengthy sentence for kidnapping, conspiracy, fraud, and his role in Daniel’s death.

Martin’s cooperation reduced his sentence, but he still went to prison.

Vivian pleaded guilty and received a substantial sentence with mandatory psychiatric supervision.

Victor was sentenced for attempted murder, though his cooperation was considered.

The corrupt hospital administrator lost his license and was imprisoned for conspiracy and unlawful disclosure of patient information.

The executives involved in the pension scheme were prosecuted.

Millions were recovered from offshore accounts.

The money was returned to the employee trust.

Outside the courthouse, former employees gathered with photographs of Lily.

Some had never met her.

All of them now knew she had protected their futures.

A retired factory worker approached Noah.

“Your mother saved my pension,” he said. “That means she helped me keep my home.”

Noah looked up at Adrian.

“She helped all these people?”

“Yes.”

“Even when they thought she was bad?”

“Yes.”

Noah considered that.

“Then the truth was still true.”

Adrian smiled through tears.

“Yes, it was.”

That evening, they returned to Vale Manor.

The enormous dining room had been prepared for a formal victory dinner.

Noah stared at the long table.

Then he carried his plate into the kitchen, where Rosa and the household staff were eating.

Adrian followed.

He removed his jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and sat beside his grandson.

For the first time in decades, the most powerful man in the room did not sit at the head of the table.

He sat where his family had saved him a chair.

But one unfinished duty remained.

Lily had no proper resting place.

And Adrian knew exactly where she should be brought home.

👉 Celeste had lost her freedom and Lily’s name had been restored—but Adrian still needed to give his daughter the homecoming she had waited eleven years to receive.
