Chapter 2 - The Boy from the Alley

Three hours earlier, Noah Bennett had been sitting behind the restaurant beside a dented service door.

He knew the kitchen staff threw away bread after the dinner rush.

He also knew which cook sometimes wrapped leftovers in foil and left them near the dumpster.

Noah had learned to notice kindness because there had been so little of it lately.

His mother, Lily, had died nine days earlier in a small charity hospital.

Before she died, she had pressed a silver locket and a sealed envelope into his hand.

“Find Adrian Vale,” she had whispered. “Show him this. Don’t give it to anyone else.”

Noah had seen Adrian’s photograph inside the locket.

He had spent days searching newspapers, hotel lobbies, and office buildings. That afternoon, he overheard a delivery driver mention that Adrian Vale was dining at La Lumière.

So Noah waited outside.

He was afraid the staff would chase him away before he could reach Adrian.

Then the service door opened.

A waiter named Victor stepped into the alley, speaking angrily into his phone.

“I’m not doing this unless the second payment clears.”

Noah crouched behind stacked crates.

A woman in a red coat emerged from a black car.

Celeste.

Noah recognized her from photographs beside Adrian in the newspapers.

She handed Victor a velvet pouch.

“You don’t have to do anything difficult,” she said. “Just add three drops after the plate leaves the kitchen.”

Victor’s hands shook.

“And if they test it?”

“They won’t. His heart condition will explain everything.”

Noah stopped breathing.

Celeste lowered her voice.

“By midnight, I’ll be a grieving widow. And you’ll be somewhere no one can question you.”

She returned to the car.

Victor opened the pouch.

Inside was a tiny glass vial.

Noah knew he had to warn Adrian.

But as he rose, his foot struck an empty bottle.

Victor spun around.

Their eyes met.

“You!”

Noah ran.

Victor chased him across the alley, through the service corridor, and into the kitchen.

Noah slipped between cooks carrying hot pans. Victor shouted that a thief had broken in.

Security moved toward the commotion.

Noah saw the sea bass plate being carried into the dining room.

He saw Victor reach over it with the vial.

And he knew he had only seconds left.

👉 Noah had saved Adrian’s life, but Victor had seen the locket around the boy’s neck—and he knew exactly why Celeste would want it destroyed.
