Chapter 1 - The Plate He Wasn’t Supposed to Touch

“Stop! Don’t eat that!”
The scream tore through the elegant rooftop restaurant just as Adrian Vale lifted a forkful of sea bass toward his mouth.
Every head turned.
A barefoot six-year-old boy stood between the crystal chandeliers and white-clothed tables, breathing as if he had run for miles. His shirt was torn at one shoulder. Dirt streaked his cheeks. His eyes were locked on Adrian’s plate.
Two security guards rushed toward him.
“Get him out,” Celeste Vale snapped.
She stood behind Adrian in a fitted red dress, one hand clutching her purse. For half a second, her face had gone completely still.
Adrian saw it.
The boy pointed past him toward Celeste and a nervous waiter near the kitchen.
“I saw them,” he gasped. “She gave him a little bottle.”
Celeste laughed too quickly.
“He just wants money.”
Guests raised their phones.
Adrian lowered the fork.
Then, without warning, he exchanged his plate with Celeste’s.
Her hand shot forward.
“Adrian, don’t be ridiculous.”
He studied her pale face.
“Then eat from mine.”
Celeste froze.
Something small slipped from the waiter’s folded towel and struck the marble floor.
A glass vial.
Adrian’s head of security, Elias, immediately locked the exits. Detective Mara Quinn, already connected through Adrian’s phone, entered with two officers.
“Seal the room,” she ordered.
Adrian pushed the untouched plate toward her.
“Test it.”
The barefoot boy moved behind Adrian’s chair, trembling so hard his teeth clicked.
Celeste stared at him with hatred.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Then the boy reached into his torn pocket and closed his fingers around something hidden inside.
Celeste noticed.

And for the first time, she looked more terrified of what was in his pocket than what was on the plate.
👉 Adrian had nearly been poisoned—but the barefoot child was carrying evidence of a betrayal that had begun years before that dinner.
