Rosa immediately reported the transfer.
The money came from a trust in the Cayman Islands.
Its ownership records pointed to Adrian.
Celeste’s attorney leaked the information to the press.
Headlines appeared within hours:
BILLIONAIRE PAYS GRANDSON’S FAMILY BEFORE POISON TESTIMONY.
Adrian denied authorizing the transfer.
Public opinion turned quickly.
Commentators questioned whether the barefoot child had been used to create sympathy.
Noah saw one report on television.
“They think I lied?”
Adrian turned it off.
“The truth does not become false because someone attacks it.”
“But what if they don’t believe me?”
Adrian knelt before him.
“I believe you. Detective Quinn believes you. The cameras believe you. And the plate believes you.”
Noah almost smiled.
Financial investigators traced the trust documents.
Martin Shaw had created the account years earlier using Adrian’s forged signature.
He had initiated the payment from jail through instructions previously given to an associate.
The associate was arrested while attempting to leave the country.
He surrendered encrypted emails between Martin and Celeste.
One message, written before the poisoning, said:
If the child appears, use the compensation account. Make his family look purchased.
Celeste had anticipated Noah might reach Adrian.
She knew Lily was dying.
Someone at the charity hospital had been reporting Lily’s condition.
The reporter was a hospital administrator whose gambling debts Celeste paid.
He had told her Lily gave Noah a locket and letters.
That was why Celeste recognized the boy immediately at the restaurant.
She had not expected him to witness the poisoning.
But she knew exactly who he was.
The million-dollar transfer became further evidence of obstruction.
Celeste’s defense strategy collapsed.
Then Quinn received the toxicology report.
The sea bass contained a rare cardiac toxin in a dose strong enough to kill Adrian within minutes.
The same compound was found in a bottle recovered from Celeste’s private bathroom.
Adrian should have felt relief.
Instead, he stared at the report and thought about how close Noah had come to arriving one second too late.
He went to the guest room where the boy was sleeping.
Noah was awake.
“Grandpa?”
It was the first time he had used the word.
Adrian sat beside him.
“Yes?”
“Can I stay even when the police are done?”
Adrian’s answer came without hesitation.
“You are home.”
But before any permanent arrangement could be made, the court required a custody hearing.
