Chapter 10 - The Empty Hospital Room

The hospital security footage showed Noah leaving willingly.

A gray-haired woman held his hand.

She wore a volunteer badge and carried a stuffed bear.

Noah seemed to recognize her.

Adrian stared at the screen.

“Who is she?”

The hospital administrator enlarged the image.

The woman was Rosa Bennett, Daniel’s mother.

Noah’s other grandmother.

Rosa had arrived after hearing about Lily’s death from a charity worker. She had searched shelters and hospitals for Noah.

When she found him surrounded by police, she panicked.

She believed Adrian’s family had already destroyed her son and Lily.

So she took Noah through a laundry elevator and left before anyone noticed.

Quinn traced Rosa’s old address to a small neighborhood outside the city.

Adrian went with her.

Rosa opened the door holding a kitchen knife.

“Stay away from him.”

Noah stood behind her.

“Grandma, he’s the man Mom told me to find.”

Rosa’s eyes filled with fury.

“He is the man who abandoned her.”

Adrian did not defend himself.

“You’re right.”

The admission disarmed her more than an argument could have.

“I believed lies,” he continued. “But I also failed to ask the right questions. Lily needed me, and I let pride speak louder than love.”

Rosa lowered the knife slightly.

Adrian handed her Lily’s letters.

“She kept writing to me. Celeste intercepted them.”

Rosa read the first page.

Her face changed.

For years, she had believed Adrian ignored every plea.

Noah stepped forward.

“Did Mom really know him?”

Rosa sat down heavily.

“She loved him,” she whispered. “Even when she was angry.”

Noah gave investigators his birthday.

The encrypted folder opened.

Inside was a video Lily had recorded six months before her death.

She looked thin and exhausted.

“Noah,” she said into the camera, “if you are watching this with your grandfather, then both of you survived Celeste.”

Adrian began to cry.

Lily explained that the stolen millions were only part of the conspiracy.

Celeste had been gradually transferring ownership of several Vale subsidiaries.

Once Adrian died, those companies would be sold and thousands of employees would lose their pensions.

The poisoning was not only about inheritance.

It was the final step in dismantling everything Adrian had built.

Then Lily revealed where the original signed ledger was hidden.

Not in a bank.

Not in a safe.
