Chapter 15 - The Custody Hearing
Celeste’s objection shocked even her attorney.
She argued that Adrian was too old, medically fragile, and emotionally unstable to care for a six-year-old.
She claimed Rosa should retain custody without Adrian’s involvement.
Rosa understood the strategy immediately.
“She doesn’t care where Noah lives,” she said. “She only wants to hurt you.”
Adrian agreed.
But the hearing forced him to confront difficult facts.
He had only known Noah for weeks.
His home was designed for business dinners, not children.
His schedule had consumed his life.
A family evaluator visited Vale Manor.
She saw staff preparing a large bedroom filled with expensive toys.
Then she asked Noah what he wanted.
He looked around the room.
“I don’t need all this.”
“What do you need?” she asked.
“My grandma. And Grandpa. And my mom’s picture where I can see it.”
The evaluator proposed shared guardianship between Adrian and Rosa.
Instead of fighting, Adrian invited Rosa to move into the estate’s guest cottage, giving Noah access to both grandparents.
Rosa hesitated.
Then she saw Adrian transform Lily’s old music room into a family room without removing her photographs.
He was not trying to replace Lily.
He was making space for her memory.
At the hearing, Celeste appeared by video.
Her face tightened when Noah sat between Adrian and Rosa.
Her attorney questioned Adrian’s past estrangement from Lily.
Adrian answered honestly.
“I failed my daughter. I believed documents instead of demanding to hear her voice. That failure is why I will never again allow pride to separate me from someone I love.”
The judge granted Adrian and Rosa joint guardianship.
Celeste’s objection was dismissed.
Outside the courthouse, Noah slipped one hand into Rosa’s and the other into Adrian’s.
For the first time since Lily’s death, he did not look afraid.
Then Detective Quinn approached with new information.
The district attorney had offered Celeste a plea deal carrying twenty-five years.
She rejected it.
She wanted a public trial.
“She believes she can still control the story,” Quinn said.
Adrian looked toward the courthouse windows.
“Then let the whole story be heard.”
The trial date was set.
And Celeste’s witness list contained one name no one expected.
