Chapter 4 - Blackout
Blackout was not a military operation.
It was a classification.
Twenty-two years earlier, Sarah had served in a small interagency unit that investigated private networks capable of influencing national security through wealth rather than weapons.
The unit followed money.
Defense contracts.
Private intelligence firms.
Political donations.
Offshore foundations.
The Vance network appeared repeatedly.
Elias was never charged.
Every investigation collapsed after witnesses disappeared, evidence was ruled contaminated, or agencies suddenly lost jurisdiction.
Sarah’s team believed someone inside the government protected him.
Then Operation Blackout began.
The objective was to identify that protector.
Sarah entered the Vance organization under an assumed identity and spent fourteen months collecting evidence.
She came close.
Too close.
One night, the team’s safe house was attacked.
Two agents died.
A third vanished.
Sarah survived because someone anonymously warned her six minutes before the breach.
The message contained only one instruction.
Blackout compromised. Burn everything.
Sarah destroyed the primary files.
At least, she believed she had.
The operation was sealed.
Her identity was erased from official reports.
She left government service shortly afterward.
Years later, she married Maya’s father, Daniel Thorne.
Daniel died in a car crash when Maya was six.
Sarah raised her daughter alone.
She never told Maya that Daniel had once worked for Elias Vance.
She never told her that his death happened three days after he claimed to have found one surviving Blackout file.
Now Elias stood in the ballroom staring at the storage device from Maya’s clutch.
“That file was destroyed.”
Sarah heard certainty beneath his fear.
He knew what the device contained.
But Maya could not have known about Blackout unless someone had shown her.
Sarah looked again at the blinking pin.
Jonathan Sterling touched it instinctively.
He did not appear to understand why it was active.
Someone had placed a transmitter on him without his knowledge.
The same person may have hidden the device inside Maya’s clutch.
Someone inside the gala had restarted Blackout before Sarah arrived.
