Chapter 16 - Daniel Returns

The gray sedan stopped beneath the ballroom steps.
Sarah positioned guards away from Maya.
She did not trust the remaining Vance security, so Adrian used the Blackout override to control their radios.
The main doors opened.
Michael Rourke entered first.
He was seventy.
Broad-shouldered.
Gray-haired.
His posture still carried military precision.
Daniel walked beside him.
Older than the man Sarah remembered.
Thin.
A scar visible near his temple.
His eyes moved across the ballroom without recognition.
Then he saw Sarah.
He stopped.
No smile.
No name.
Only confusion.
Sarah’s control nearly broke.
Maya whispered, “Dad.”
Daniel looked toward her.
Something changed.
A fragment of recognition.
Michael guided him forward.
“He remembers pieces.”
Sarah raised her weapon.
“Step away from him.”
Michael obeyed.
His confidence made Sarah more cautious.
He had entered a room filled with enemies and federal attention without resistance.
That meant he still believed he controlled something.
Catherine stared at Daniel.
“I kept you alive.”
Daniel turned toward her.
His face tightened.
Fear.
Memory lived somewhere beneath the damage.
Michael held up a small drive.
“The final Blackout ledger.”
Sarah did not lower her weapon.
“You staged your death.”
“To survive Catherine.”
Catherine laughed bitterly.
“You built all of us into weapons.”
Michael ignored her.
He told Sarah the file she uploaded was incomplete.
It exposed financial crimes but not the names of active government protectors.
Those names were on his drive.
He would surrender it in exchange for immunity and safe passage.
Elias shouted that Michael was bluffing.
Arthur warned him to remain silent.
Their fear confirmed the drive mattered.
Sarah looked at Daniel.
“Did he help you?”
Daniel touched his temple.
“Car.”
One word.
Then another.
“Fire.”
He looked at Michael.
“You left me.”
Michael’s confidence faltered.
Daniel remembered enough.
Michael had not rescued him from Catherine years earlier.
He had tried to kill him in the staged crash.
Daniel survived and was later found by Catherine.
The man offering the final truth had caused the original loss.
