Chapter 10 - Daniel’s Vault
The vault recognized Sarah’s heartbeat.
Not her fingerprint.
Not her face.
A sensor inside the door measured a coded rhythm created by an old cardiac implant used during Blackout operations.
Sarah had undergone the procedure after an injury.
Only three people knew.
Daniel.
Catherine.
And the unit surgeon.
Catherine.
Sarah looked toward the camera above the corridor.
Catherine had known the vault needed her.
That explained years of proximity.
Arthur ordered Sarah to open it.
She refused.
He aimed the pistol toward Jonathan.
His own son.
Jonathan whispered, “Dad.”
Arthur did not blink.
“Open the door.”
Sarah placed her gloved hand over the scanner.
The sensor activated.
A green light appeared.
The steel door unlocked.
Inside was a narrow room containing one table, a projector, and a sealed evidence case.
Daniel’s name was engraved on the case.
Arthur moved forward.
Adrian blocked him.
The pistol fired.
The shot struck the wall after Sarah redirected Arthur’s wrist.
She trapped his arm, forced the weapon down, and disarmed him.
Jonathan kicked the pistol away.
For the first time, he acted against his father.
Adrian secured Arthur’s hands with a plastic restraint.
Sarah entered the vault.
The evidence case opened with the same cardiac code.
Inside was a second storage device.
A wedding ring.
Daniel’s.
And a recorded message dated two weeks after his supposed death.
Sarah could not breathe.
She activated the projector.
Daniel appeared.
Bruised.
Alive.
He said the car crash had been staged after he discovered the network planned to kill Sarah and Maya.
He disappeared to keep them safe.
Sarah gripped the table.
Daniel continued.
“If you are seeing this, I failed to come home.”
Then he revealed that Catherine helped him escape.
But she had also demanded a price.
Daniel had to surrender the original Blackout evidence to her.
Catherine had not protected him for loyalty.
She had built her own faction.
