Chapter 2 - The Daughter Who Did Not Answer
Six hours earlier, Maya had entered the charity gala alone.
Sarah had warned her not to attend.
The Vance Foundation presented itself as a network supporting veterans, medical research, and young entrepreneurs.
Sarah knew it was something else.
For twenty years, Elias Vance had used philanthropy to gather influence.
Senators attended his dinners.
Police commissioners accepted his donations.
Corporate heirs treated his estates as neutral territory where private agreements could be made without records.
Maya believed Sarah’s suspicions came from old grudges.
“You see threats everywhere,” she had said that morning.
Sarah did not explain why.
She had spent most of Maya’s childhood refusing to discuss the years before becoming a security consultant.
Maya knew her mother had served in the military.
She did not know which unit.
She did not know the word Blackout.
At 8:17 p.m., Maya sent Sarah a photograph from the ballroom.
She looked happy in her red dress.
At 8:24, she sent another message.
This one contained only four words.
He knows who you are.
Sarah called immediately.
No answer.
At 8:27, Maya’s location signal disappeared.
At 8:31, a private number contacted Sarah.
A man instructed her to come alone.
No police.
No press.
No weapons.
He said Maya had consumed too much champagne and embarrassed herself.
Sarah knew Maya rarely drank.
The man added that Elias Vance wished to resolve the misunderstanding privately.
Sarah opened a locked case she had not touched in eleven years.
Inside lay the black tactical uniform.
Her old radio.
An encrypted phone.
And a badge with every identifying mark removed.
She drove to the Vance estate.
At the gate, private security demanded she surrender her phone.
She broke the first guard’s wrist restraint without injuring him.
The second guard recognized her vest markings.
He whispered one word.
“Blackout.”
Then he stepped aside.
By the time Sarah entered the ballroom, Maya had been moved toward the rear exit.
And Elias had already opened the briefcase containing one million dollars.
