Sarah looked at the people surrounding her.

Michael extended the final drive.
“Take it.”
Sarah did not move.
“What activates it?”
“Daniel’s voice.”
Daniel stared at the object.
Michael claimed the ledger was locked to a phrase Daniel recorded years earlier.

Sarah recognized another trap.
Michael needed Daniel conscious.
He also needed Sarah close enough to authorize the Blackout network.
The gala had now gathered every surviving key-holder in one room.
Maya realized it first.
“He wants all of you connected.”
Adrian checked Sarah’s phone.

Michael’s drive could enter that mesh and take control.
The final ledger might be malware.
Sarah ordered all devices disconnected.
Michael pressed a concealed switch.
The ballroom doors unlocked.
Security cameras rotated toward Sarah.

Michael had inserted a signal before entering.
His cane contained the transmitter.
Sarah kicked it away.
Adrian shut down the local network manually.
Lights failed again.
In darkness, someone grabbed the drive.
When emergency lighting returned, Michael’s hand was empty.
Maya held the drive inside her red clutch.
She had taken it while everyone watched Sarah.
Now Michael looked at her with the same calculating interest Elias once had.
