Chapter 9 - The First Crack in Her Armor

Federal agents entered the hotel under the pretense of investigating a security threat.
Rebecca Sloan met Daniel in a private kitchen.
“We have Mercer’s statement on Marcus’s body camera,” she said. “It establishes intent, but Evelyn can claim he acted independently.”
Daniel looked through the glass doors at his mother.
Evelyn stood in the ballroom comforting frightened donors, presenting herself as the calm leader during a crisis.
“She’s still performing.”
“She has survived for thirty years by making other people carry out her crimes.”
Daniel showed Rebecca the descendant trust documents.
Rebecca scanned them.
“This gives your daughter controlling interest in Cross Holdings when she turns twenty-five. Until then, her legal guardian controls the voting shares.”
Daniel understood.
If Lena had announced her pregnancy, Daniel and Lena together would have controlled the trust. Evelyn would have lost the company she had spent her life dominating.
“That was the motive,” Rebecca said.
“No. It was one motive.”
Daniel remembered Lena saying Evelyn believed she knew where Arthur Cross had hidden something else.
The brass key felt heavy in his pocket.
Across the ballroom, Evelyn met his eyes.
She knew he had survived her first move.
Daniel walked toward her.
“Where is Mercer?”
“I don’t know who that is.”
“He worked for you.”
“Daniel, grief has made you vulnerable to dangerous fantasies.”
He leaned close.
“Lena is alive.”
For the first time, Evelyn’s face lost all expression.
Then she smiled.
“Bring her to me.”
“Why?”
“Because that poor woman is clearly unwell.”
“You kept her in a bunker.”
Evelyn’s eyes flicked toward his jacket pocket.
Toward the outline of the brass key.
Daniel saw recognition.
His father’s key mattered more to her than the trust.
Evelyn whispered, “You have no idea what your wife stole from this family.”
Then she walked away.
Daniel called Lena.
“Did you ever learn what the key opens?”
“No,” Lena said. “But your father told me one thing before he died.”
“What?”
“He said the truth was hidden where Evelyn could see it every day but would never kneel to reach it.”
Daniel slowly turned toward the enormous portrait of his father hanging behind the board table.

At the bottom of the frame, near the floor, was a small brass lock.
👉 Arthur Cross had hidden his final evidence inside Evelyn’s own headquarters—and she was already coming back to destroy it.
