Chapter 7 - The Empty Crib

Daniel did not touch the blanket.
“Where did you get that?”
Evelyn watched him closely.
“Does it matter?”
His secure phone vibrated once inside his pocket—the emergency signal from Marcus.
Daniel’s pulse surged.
At the penthouse, Marcus rushed into the nursery and found Hope’s crib empty.
The balcony door stood open.
Lena was unconscious on the floor beside a shattered glass of water.
Daniel knew none of those details yet, but the emergency code meant one thing.
Breach.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“You always were too sentimental,” she said. “Even as a boy. Your father worried it would make you weak.”
“Where is the child?”
Charles Voss shifted uneasily.
Mrs. Alden stared at the floor.
Evelyn smiled.
“So there is a child.”
Daniel had confirmed it.
The trap had turned.
He forced himself to remain calm.
“My hotel deals with hundreds of families every day.”
“Then sign the papers.”
Evelyn slid a pen toward him.
“If the child is irrelevant, you lose nothing.”
Daniel understood the real bargain. Sign away the company, the trust, and any legal claim Hope might have—or Evelyn would hurt her.
He picked up the pen.
At that moment, Lena regained consciousness in the penthouse.
She crawled toward the open balcony, then noticed wet footprints leading not outside, but toward the service elevator.
The kidnapping had been staged to look like an escape through the balcony.
Hope was still inside the building.
Lena staggered to her feet and followed the footprints.
Back in the library, Daniel lowered the pen toward the signature line.
Evelyn leaned forward.
Then every light in the ballroom went out.
Marcus had activated the hotel’s emergency lockdown.
Daniel dropped the pen and seized his mother’s wrist.
The blue stone ring flashed under the emergency lights.
“Where is my daughter?”
Evelyn’s composure finally cracked.

“You were never supposed to know she existed.”
👉 As the building sealed shut, Lena followed her baby’s cries toward the one person Daniel had trusted most.
