Chapter 11 - The Choice in the Smoke

Smoke filled the boardroom.

Daniel wrapped his jacket around Lena’s face while Marcus tried to force the stairwell door.

Rebecca located the security control panel, but Evelyn had overridden it remotely.

“You can’t save everyone,” Evelyn said through the speakers. “You never could.”

Daniel looked toward the sealed windows.

They were twelve floors above the street.

Hope began to cry.

Lena took the steel box from Rebecca and held it beneath a fire sprinkler.

“What are you doing?” Daniel asked.

“She wants the originals.”

Lena removed the ledger and flash drive, placed them inside a metal champagne bucket, and pushed it beneath a catering cart.

Then she carried the empty box to the center of the room.

“Evelyn!” she shouted. “Open the doors and I’ll give it back!”

Silence.

Then the speaker crackled.

“You always were clever, Lena. Not clever enough, but clever.”

One exit unlocked.

Daniel stared at Lena.

“She’ll be waiting.”

“I know.”

They moved through the door into the executive corridor.

Mercer stood at the far end holding Mrs. Alden by the arm. Evelyn waited behind him.

Lena held up the steel box.

“Let her go.”

Evelyn smiled.

“You survived two years and still believe mercy is real.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You wanted the company. You wanted the trust. Take them. But this ends tonight.”

Evelyn looked at him almost tenderly.

“No, Daniel. It ended the day you chose that woman over your family.”

She nodded toward Mercer.

He raised a gun.

Before he could aim, Mrs. Alden drove her heel into his foot and threw herself sideways.

Marcus pulled Hope behind the wall.

Rebecca shouted for Mercer to drop the weapon.

The gun fired once into the ceiling.

Daniel charged him.

The steel box fell from Lena’s hands and burst open.

Empty.

Evelyn stared at it.

Her eyes widened with fury.

“You lying little thief.”

Lena stood upright despite the smoke.

“You taught me how to survive.”

Evelyn reached into her purse and pulled out a second weapon.

But she did not point it at Lena.

She aimed at Hope.

👉 Evelyn had finally abandoned every mask she wore—and Daniel had only one second to place himself between his mother and his child.
