Chapter 10 - Behind the Portrait
Daniel waited until the ballroom had been evacuated.
Rebecca stationed agents outside while Marcus watched the hall.
Daniel knelt beneath his father’s portrait and inserted the brass key.
A section of the wall clicked open.
Inside was a narrow steel box containing a ledger, a flash drive, and a sealed letter addressed to Lena.
Not Daniel.
Lena arrived carrying Hope against her chest. She stopped when she saw Arthur’s handwriting.
“He gave this to you?” Daniel asked.
“Not exactly.”
Six months before Arthur Cross died, Lena had discovered irregular transfers from the family foundation. She quietly brought them to him.
Arthur had already suspected Evelyn was stealing from charitable medical programs and using shell companies to buy influence.
He feared his wife would destroy anyone who exposed her.
“He told me that if anything happened to him, I should find the key in his hospital Bible,” Lena said. “But Evelyn removed everything from his room before I could.”
Arthur’s letter explained why he trusted Lena.
She had refused money in exchange for silence.
The flash drive contained years of financial records, secret recordings, and photographs of properties controlled by Evelyn’s network.
One photograph showed the orchard where Lena had been held.
Rebecca exhaled slowly.
“This can dismantle the entire organization.”
Daniel turned to the final page of the ledger.
A list of payments had been made to a forensic dentist, a county coroner, and Charles Voss around the time of Lena’s supposed death.
The burned body had belonged to another woman.
Her name was listed only as M.R.
Lena stared at the initials.
“There was another prisoner before me,” she whispered. “Mercer called her Mara.”
Daniel’s grief became something colder.
His mother had not merely fabricated Lena’s death.
She had used a real dead woman to do it.
An alarm sounded.
Smoke began pouring from the records room.
Evelyn had activated the building’s fire suppression system and locked the electronic exits.
Rebecca grabbed the flash drive.
Marcus lifted Hope.
Daniel pulled Lena toward the emergency stairwell.
But the door would not open.
Then Evelyn’s voice came through the building speakers.
