Chapter 13 - The Prisoner Who Remembered Everything
Mrs. Alden gave them the location.
An abandoned rehabilitation clinic stood forty miles outside the city. Evelyn had purchased it through a shell company and closed it to the public ten years earlier.
Federal agents reached the property before dawn.
Daniel stayed behind with Hope, but Lena insisted on going.
“I heard another woman through the pipes,” she told Rebecca. “She tapped messages to me at night.”
The clinic smelled of bleach and damp concrete.
Agents searched room after room until Lena heard a familiar rhythm.
Three knocks.
Pause.
Two knocks.
She ran toward a locked basement door.
Inside, they found Mara Reyes alive.
She was thin, weak, and terrified—but alive.
The burned body used to fake Lena’s death had not been Mara.
It had been Mara’s sister, Elena, who had arrived searching for her and been killed in a staged accident.
Mara had witnessed Evelyn ordering Mercer to dispose of Elena’s body and use it to close Lena’s missing-person case.
“She kept me alive because I knew where copies of the foundation records were stored,” Mara whispered.
Lena took her hand.
“You kept me alive, too.”
During captivity, Mara’s coded tapping had taught Lena how to track guard schedules. Those patterns eventually helped Lena escape with Hope.
Mara gave Rebecca one final piece of evidence.
A memory card hidden inside the hem of her hospital gown.
It contained video from the clinic’s old security system.
Evelyn was visible entering Lena’s cell.
Her voice was unmistakable.
“Daniel will bury an empty coffin, and by the time he learns the truth, his child will belong to me.”
The evidence was devastating.
Yet when Rebecca returned to the city, she delivered troubling news.
Evelyn had been released temporarily under emergency judicial review because Charles Voss claimed all recordings were illegally obtained.
Someone powerful inside the court system was helping her.
