Chapter 1 - The Woman in the Rain

“Sir… do you need a maid?”
Daniel Cross froze halfway down the marble steps of the Bellmont Hotel.
Cold rain swept beneath the golden entrance canopy. Luxury cars rolled past. Guests hurried inside without noticing the soaked woman standing near the service entrance with a sleeping baby pressed against her chest.
But Daniel noticed.
Her hair had been hacked short. Her cheeks were hollow. A fading bruise darkened the skin beneath her collar. She wore a threadbare coat over clothes several sizes too large.
She looked nothing like the woman whose funeral Daniel had attended two years earlier.
But those eyes—
“Lena?” he breathed.
The woman flinched at the sound of her name.
She moved closer without smiling. Her arms tightened around the baby.
“Don’t react,” she whispered. “Someone may be watching.”
Daniel’s entire body went rigid.
Lena leaned close enough that only he could hear her trembling voice.
“Your mother kidnapped me.”
For one terrible second, Daniel forgot how to breathe.
His gaze dropped to the child bundled in the thin gray blanket. A tiny hand rested against Lena’s chest.
Daniel slowly reached out.
“Our daughter?”
Lena’s eyes filled with tears.
Before she could answer, a black sedan across the street turned on its headlights.
Lena’s face drained of color.
“She found us.”
Daniel calmly removed his coat and wrapped it around Lena and the baby.
Then he looked toward the waiting sedan and smiled as though nothing unusual had happened.
“Come inside,” he said evenly. “You’re hired.”

But as the hotel doors closed behind them, Daniel slipped one hand into his briefcase and touched the hidden phone he had prayed he would never need.
👉 Daniel had spent two years preparing for the impossible—but Lena was about to learn that her husband had never truly believed she was dead.
