Chapter 12 - The Son She Could No Longer Control

Daniel moved before anyone else.

He stepped directly into Evelyn’s line of fire.

“Put it down, Mother.”

Her hand trembled.

“You would die for her child?”

“My child.”

“She has poisoned you against me.”

“You kidnapped my wife.”

“I protected what your father built!”

“You stole from him. You betrayed him. And you murdered a woman to fake Lena’s death.”

Evelyn’s expression twisted.

“Mara was already dying.”

Rebecca’s body camera captured the words.

Lena went still.

Evelyn continued, too furious to notice what she had admitted.

“She had no family. No future. Her death served a purpose.”

Rebecca raised her weapon.

“Evelyn Cross, drop the gun.”

Mercer lunged for the stairwell.

Marcus tackled him.

Mrs. Alden crawled toward Lena.

Daniel did not take his eyes off his mother.

“You made me mourn my living wife.”

“I gave you the chance to start over.”

“You stole my daughter’s first year.”

“That child should never have existed.”

Daniel’s voice broke.

“But she does.”

Hope cried from Lena’s arms.

The sound seemed to cut through everything.

Evelyn looked toward her granddaughter.

For one moment, Daniel saw something human in her face—not love, but fear.

Hope represented a future Evelyn could not control.

Her hand lowered slightly.

Rebecca stepped closer.

Then Charles Voss emerged from a side office and grabbed Evelyn’s wrist. The gun fired into the carpet.

Agents rushed forward.

Evelyn and Voss were restrained.

Mercer was handcuffed beside them.

As officers led Evelyn away, she looked at Daniel.

“You think this is over because you found her?”

Daniel held Lena and Hope close.

“No.”

He looked at the hidden camera above the corridor.

“It’s over because the world finally saw you.”

But Rebecca’s phone rang before they reached the elevators.

Her expression changed.

“The orchard bunker is empty,” she said. “Every record was removed an hour ago.”

“By whom?” Daniel asked.

Rebecca looked toward Mrs. Alden.
