Lena refused food until Hope had eaten.

Daniel watched her tear small pieces of bread and soften them in warm milk. She tested every spoonful against her wrist before feeding their daughter.

The tenderness nearly broke him.

When Hope finally fell asleep, Lena sat across from Daniel and Marcus.

“They kept me beneath an abandoned orchard outside Briar County,” she said. “There was a concrete room under an old packing shed. No windows. One steel door.”

Daniel’s hands curled into fists.

“Who is ‘they’?”

“Your mother came once every few weeks. The others wore masks.”

Lena pulled down the collar of her shirt. Old restraint marks crossed her shoulders. A thin scar ran beneath her collarbone.

Daniel looked away for half a second, fighting the rage climbing through him.

“She told me you had replaced me,” Lena continued. “She brought magazines with photographs of you at charity events beside other women. She said you had signed my death certificate.”

“I never signed it.”

“I know that now.”

Her voice cracked.

“At the time, I didn’t know anything.”

Lena had been pregnant when she disappeared, though she had not yet told Daniel. Evelyn discovered the pregnancy through a private laboratory she secretly controlled.

“She said my baby would inherit too much,” Lena whispered. “She said Hope would destroy the future she had designed for the Cross family.”

Daniel frowned.

“My inheritance went directly to me when Father died.”

“Not all of it.”

Lena reached beneath Hope’s blanket and removed a narrow brass key tied to a piece of string.

“Your father left something else. Your mother believes I know where it is.”

Daniel stared at the key.

“My father never mentioned another trust.”

“He didn’t leave it to you.”

“Then who?”

Lena looked toward their sleeping daughter.

“He left it to your first child.”
