Chapter 18 - The Trial of Evelyn Cross
The courthouse steps were crowded with reporters.
Lena entered through the front doors.
She refused the private entrance.
Daniel walked beside her carrying Hope, while Mara followed with Rebecca.
Inside the courtroom, Evelyn sat at the defense table wearing a plain dark suit. Without wealth, cameras, or servants, she looked smaller.
But when Lena took the witness stand, Evelyn smiled.
“You survived because I allowed it,” she mouthed.
Lena looked directly at her.
For three hours, she described the abduction, the underground room, Hope’s birth without medical help, and the night she escaped through a drainage tunnel during a storm.
She explained how she walked for two days with a newborn, hid in shelters under false names, and searched for Daniel while avoiding every institution Evelyn controlled.
Then prosecutors played the clinic recording.
Evelyn’s own voice filled the courtroom.
“Daniel will bury an empty coffin.”
Jurors stared at her.
Mara testified next.
Mrs. Alden testified after her.
Even Mercer confirmed Evelyn’s orders.
The defense argued that Daniel had manufactured the evidence to seize control of the company.
Then the prosecutor called the final witness.
Daniel.
He described his mother falsifying Lena’s death, monitoring his communications, and pressuring him to surrender the company.
At the end, he looked at Evelyn.
“I loved you because you were my mother,” he said. “But love is not permission to destroy people.”
Evelyn finally lost control.
“That child stole everything from me!”
Hope stirred in Lena’s arms.
The courtroom fell silent.
The jury needed less than four hours.
Guilty on every major count.
Evelyn was sentenced to spend the rest of her life in federal prison without the power she had worshipped.
As officers led her away, she looked back at Daniel.
He did not follow her with his eyes.
