Chapter 17 - The Home She Could Choose

The criminal case became national news.

Evelyn Cross was charged with kidnapping, conspiracy, attempted murder, unlawful imprisonment, financial fraud, bribery, and obstruction of justice.

Mercer accepted a plea deal and revealed the locations of every hidden property.

Charles Voss lost his law license and was charged with falsifying death records and laundering money.

Mrs. Alden pleaded guilty to aiding the kidnapping. Her cooperation and rescue of Hope were considered, but she still faced prison.

Daniel did not interfere.

Justice could not depend on family influence again.

Lena testified behind closed doors before a grand jury. Mara sat beside her.

When Lena returned to the safe house, Daniel had packed a suitcase.

“Where are you going?” she asked.

“To the hotel.”

“Why?”

“You deserve a place without me while you decide what comes next.”

Lena looked toward Hope, sleeping in a new crib.

“You think I want you gone?”

“I don’t know what you want. That’s the point.”

Daniel placed his wedding ring on the table.

“I will remain Hope’s father. I’ll provide anything you need. But I won’t use our marriage to trap you after someone else already did.”

Lena picked up the ring.

For two years, she had imagined returning to him. But the man in those dreams was frozen in the past—smiling in their kitchen, unaware of his mother’s crimes.

The man before her was different.

He had learned patience.

He had chosen truth over reputation.

Still, love could not erase trauma.

“I’m not ready to go home,” she said.

Daniel nodded, hiding his pain.

“But I don’t want you to leave.”

He looked up.

Lena placed the ring back into his hand.

“Wear it. Don’t make promises for me. Just stay while I learn how to live again.”

Daniel slipped the ring onto his finger.

“I can do that.”

Then Hope woke and reached toward him.

Daniel lifted his daughter, and Lena watched them together for the first time without fear.

But the family still had to face Evelyn in open court.

👉 Lena had reclaimed her choice—but the final confrontation would force Evelyn to hear the truth from the granddaughter she tried to erase.
