Chapter 8 - THE WIDOWER WHO DIDN’T WAIT
Grace hated the plan.
Every instinct told her to take Lily and confront Ethan immediately.
Margaret explained why that would be dangerous.
“The video proves he locked you outside. It does not yet prove he staged your disappearance or planned to collect the policy.”
“He left a baby in a blizzard.”
“And he’ll say he expected you to return and that you chose to walk away.”
Grace looked toward Lily’s hospital crib.
“He’ll lie.”
“That is why we let his actions answer for him.”
Under court supervision, Grace entered a protected recovery apartment.
Only Margaret, Detective Reed, Owen, and two medical professionals knew she was alive.
Ethan began moving quickly.
Within forty-eight hours, he filed an emergency petition claiming Grace was missing and mentally unstable.
He requested temporary control of Northcrest to protect the employees.
He also submitted the forged transfer documents dated before the storm.
Sabrina became acting events director with expanded financial authority.
Together, they withdrew $600,000 from operating reserves.
They paid debts connected to Ethan’s failed hotel development.
Then Ethan made a private claim against Grace’s life insurance policy.
The insurer refused because Grace had not been declared dead.
Ethan produced a death certificate.
It was fraudulent.
The certificate claimed Grace and Lily had died from exposure, even though no bodies had been recovered.
A county records clerk had accepted a bribe to enter it into the system.
Detective Reed now had evidence of insurance fraud and public-records tampering.
Still, prosecutors wanted proof that Ethan knew the certificate was false.
Three weeks after the storm, he proposed to Sabrina.
He told friends grief had shown him how short life could be.
They scheduled the wedding at Northcrest for six weeks later.
Sabrina ordered Grace’s favorite white flowers.
She chose Grace’s ballroom.
She even moved into the mountain house.
Grace read the wedding announcement without crying.
“What kind of woman marries a man nine weeks after his wife disappears?” Owen asked.
“The kind who was waiting before she disappeared,” Grace replied.
