Chapter 4 - THE POLICY ON A BABY
The policy insured Grace for $12 million.
Lily’s rider added another $2 million.
The original beneficiary had been a protected family trust.
Someone had replaced it with a newly created company called Cole Legacy Holdings.
Ethan controlled the company.
Grace’s signature appeared on the change request.
The document had supposedly been signed at Northcrest while Grace was still hospitalized after giving birth.
Detective Reed opened a quiet investigation.
He told Grace not to confront Ethan yet.
“We know there’s fraud,” he said. “We need to understand the full plan.”
Margaret moved Grace’s ownership interest into an emergency protective trust.
Ethan would not be notified unless he tried to transfer, mortgage, or sell the estate.
Grace also recorded a statement confirming she was healthy, mentally competent, and acting voluntarily.
She wanted to leave immediately.
But the mountain pass was closing as a major storm approached.
Northcrest’s employee housing was full, and the nearest safe shelter was nearly sixty miles away.
Margaret arranged for a state trooper to meet Grace the following morning.
Until then, Grace planned to remain inside the mountain house with Lily.
That evening, Ethan behaved as though nothing was wrong.
He cooked dinner.
He warmed Lily’s bottle.
He asked Grace whether she wanted to spend Christmas in Aspen.
Then Sabrina arrived.
She claimed the ballroom’s heating system had failed.
Ethan said they needed to discuss the upcoming wedding schedule.
Grace watched Sabrina remove snow from her red coat.
There was no emergency equipment in her car.
No maintenance reports in her hands.
Only a leather folder.
Grace secretly activated the mountain house’s new doorbell backup.
The camera had been installed two weeks earlier after packages disappeared.
Ethan believed it stored footage locally.
Grace had quietly connected it to Margaret’s encrypted cloud account.
At 10:13 p.m., Grace heard Ethan and Sabrina arguing in the study.
“She transferred it,” Sabrina said. “The trust alert came through.”
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“Then she knows.”
A cabinet opened.
Paper tore.
Then Ethan said the sentence that made Grace reach for the hidden phone.
