Chapter 15 - GRACE TAKES THE STAND
The courtroom was silent when Grace entered carrying no baby.
Lily remained with Margaret in a secure family room.
Ethan watched Grace approach the witness stand.
For months, he had seen her only from a distance.
He looked thinner.
The confidence that once filled every room had disappeared.
Grace testified about the shell companies.
The forged insurance policy.
The documents Ethan ordered her to sign.
Then the prosecutor played the doorbell video.
Grace heard Lily’s crying fill the courtroom.
Her hands began to shake.
“Do you need a break?” the judge asked.
Grace looked toward Ethan.
“No.”
She described walking through waist-deep snow while trying to keep her daughter warm.
She described the caretaker’s cabin.
The broken matches.
The moment Lily stopped crying.
“I believed my baby was dying against my heart,” she said. “And I knew her father was inside a warm house.”
Ethan lowered his head.
His attorney argued that Ethan expected Grace to remain on the porch.
Grace answered:
“He disabled every lock, every keypad, and every exterior light.”
The prosecutor played Ethan’s recording.
The trust requires both of them gone.
Several jurors looked toward Ethan in disgust.
Grace continued.
“He did not lose control for one moment. He planned what the storm would do after he closed the door.”
Sabrina testified under a cooperation agreement.
She admitted helping stage the SUV and forge the property records.
She insisted Ethan promised Grace would return and sign.
The prosecutor asked one question.
“When you heard the baby crying, did you unlock the door?”
Sabrina began to cry.
“No.”
“Then you made your choice too.”
The trial lasted five weeks.
The jury found Ethan guilty of attempted murder, attempted murder of a child, conspiracy, fraud, forgery, evidence tampering, and crimes connected to Henry Walsh’s death.
Sabrina was convicted on multiple conspiracy and fraud charges.
Victor Hale and the corrupt clerk were convicted separately.
