Chapter 5 - LOCKED OUT

Grace wrapped Lily in two blankets and moved toward the side door.

Her diaper bag contained formula, medication, and the hidden phone.

She was three steps from freedom when Ethan entered the hallway.

“Where are you going?”

“Lily has a fever.”

It was a lie.

Ethan looked at the baby, then at the bag.

“The roads are closed.”

“I’m calling an ambulance.”

He took Grace’s regular phone from her hand.

Sabrina appeared behind him.

Her red coat was gone.

She held the leather folder containing forged property documents.

“You moved the estate into a trust,” Ethan said.

Grace’s fear became anger.

“You stole millions from it.”

“I built Northcrest into what it is.”

“My grandmother built it.”

“And left it to someone who doesn’t understand business.”

Grace moved backward.

“Give me my phone.”

“Sign the reversal.”

Ethan placed the documents on the entry table.

They transferred Northcrest Estate, the mountain house, and Grace’s investment accounts to Cole Legacy Holdings.

Grace stared at the signature line.

“You put an insurance policy on our baby.”

“That was standard planning.”

“You changed the beneficiary.”

Sabrina stepped closer.

“Sign the papers, Grace.”

“No.”

Ethan’s face became unfamiliar.

Not enraged.

Empty.

He opened the front door.

Wind drove snow into the house.

Grace tightened her arms around Lily.

“What are you doing?”

“Helping you understand your position.”

He seized Grace’s upper arm and dragged her toward the porch.

She fought to stay inside.

Lily began crying.

“Ethan, stop!”

He shoved Grace across the threshold.

Her knees struck the snow-covered wood.

She protected Lily with her body.

Sabrina threw the diaper bag after her.

“Sign when you’re ready to be reasonable.”

The door slammed.

Grace struggled upright and pounded on the glass.

“Lily will die out here!”

Ethan stood on the other side.

For one terrible second, Grace believed he might open it.

Then he reached forward and turned the lock.

👉 Ethan expected the cold to force Grace back to the documents—but when he switched off the exterior lights, she realized he never intended to let her return.
