Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD
The orchestra stopped in the middle of the wedding march.
Grace Holloway stood in the center aisle of the Northcrest Grand Ballroom, wearing a plain gray dress and carrying her sleeping infant against her chest.
Every guest turned.
Several screamed.
At the altar, Ethan Cole stared at her as though a body had risen from its grave.
“What are you doing here?”
Behind him, Sabrina Vale stumbled over the train of her wedding gown and fell onto the marble floor.
Grace did not look at the bride.
Her eyes remained fixed on the man who had locked her and their six-week-old daughter outside during the worst blizzard Colorado had seen in twenty years.
“You left us in the snow.”
Ethan took one unsteady step backward.
“That isn’t what happened.”
Grace raised a pair of handcuffs.
She was not wearing them.
She was offering them to the detectives entering through the ballroom doors.
“You forgot the camera.”
She turned her phone toward Ethan.
On the screen, a recovered doorbell video showed him shoving Grace through the front door of the mountain house. Her newborn was bundled against her chest. Snow tore across the porch behind them.
Then Ethan locked the door.
A detective near the entrance received the same video on his tablet.
Beside him stood Grace’s attorney, Margaret Shaw, holding a thick folder marked:
ORIGINAL OWNERSHIP RECORDS—NORTHCREST ESTATE.
“That’s enough,” Detective Marcus Reed said.
Two officers moved toward Ethan.
Sabrina remained on the floor, her face drained of color.
Grace stepped closer to the altar.
“I’m taking back everything.”
“You can’t,” Ethan whispered. “You’re legally dead.”
Grace’s expression did not change.
“No, Ethan. I’m legally the owner.”
Margaret opened the folder.
The ballroom where Ethan planned to marry his mistress did not belong to him.
Neither did the hotel.
Neither did the mountain house.
