Chapter 16 - THE MAN WHO BLAMED THE DOOR
“I never wanted Grace or Lily to die,” Ethan said.
His hands gripped the defense table.
“I was desperate. Northcrest was failing. Everyone depended on me.”
Grace sat beside Margaret.
Northcrest had not been failing.
Ethan’s secret investments had been.
He continued.
“Grace shut me out of decisions. She treated me like an employee in my own home.”
The judge’s expression hardened.
“It was not your estate.”
“I made it successful.”
“You stole from it.”
Ethan turned toward Grace.
“If you had signed the papers, none of this would have happened.”
Grace stood when it was time for her statement.
“That sentence is why I know you are not sorry.”
Ethan looked away.
“You still believe I caused your violence by refusing to surrender.”
Grace spoke about Lily.
“She was six weeks old. She had no signature. She had no company. She had never denied you anything.”
Her voice broke once.
She steadied it.
“You chose a world where your daughter’s death was useful to you.”
Grace also spoke about Henry Walsh.
A man who tried to protect a promise made to Eleanor.
A man whose family lost him because he discovered the truth.
Ethan received consecutive prison sentences that ensured he would spend most, if not all, of his life incarcerated.
Sabrina received a lengthy sentence, reduced only because she provided evidence and testified.
Victor Hale lost his law license, surrendered hidden assets, and received prison time.
The county clerk and financial director were sentenced for their roles.
The fraudulent sale was canceled.
The forged death certificates were voided.
Grace and Lily were legally restored as living citizens and sole beneficiaries of the Northcrest trust.
The court returned every property, account, and management right.
Outside the courthouse, reporters asked Grace whether she felt victorious.
She looked at Lily sleeping in Margaret’s arms.
“No,” Grace said. “I feel alive.”
Justice had returned Northcrest.
