Chapter 3 - THE SECOND PHONE
Grace told Ethan she had been checking payroll.
He studied her face before placing the flowers on the kitchen counter.
“You should rest.”
“I’m fine.”
“You haven’t been yourself since Lily was born.”
The words sounded caring.
The warning beneath them did not.
That night, Ethan waited until Grace was asleep and carried her laptop downstairs.
Grace heard the office door close.
She followed quietly.
Through a narrow opening, she saw Ethan connect a small black drive to her computer.
Sabrina’s name appeared on his phone.
He answered in a whisper.
“She found the transfers.”
Grace stopped breathing.
Sabrina responded loudly enough for Grace to hear one sentence.
“Then move the deadline.”
Ethan glanced toward the hallway.
Grace stepped back before he saw her.
She returned to bed and pretended to sleep.
The following morning, she called Margaret Shaw, the attorney who had handled her grandmother’s estate.
Margaret asked Grace to bring copies of everything.
“Do not use your personal email,” she warned. “And do not tell Ethan you contacted me.”
Grace took Lily to the pediatrician as an excuse to leave.
In Margaret’s office, they examined the payments.
Summit Risk Solutions was only one of five shell companies.
Together, they had received more than $3.7 million.
The money had funded Ethan’s private investments, Sabrina’s luxury apartment, and a failed hotel development Ethan kept hidden from Grace.
Margaret also found something more alarming.
Three weeks earlier, Ethan had requested certified copies of Grace’s birth certificate, marriage license, property deeds, and Lily’s hospital records.
“Why would he need those?” Grace asked.
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“To transfer assets, challenge your capacity, or prepare documents that become useful if you die.”
Grace looked down at Lily sleeping in her carrier.
Margaret placed a hand over hers.
“We need to secure the estate immediately.”
Before Grace left, Margaret gave her a second phone.
Only three people had the number.
Grace.
Margaret.
Detective Marcus Reed, who specialized in financial crimes.
That afternoon, Grace received a message on the hidden phone.
