Chapter 7 - THE MAN WITH THE SNOWPLOW

Grace kicked the cabin door until the ice broke.

Inside, the air was nearly as cold as outside.

She found matches in a rusted tin and dry wood beneath a canvas cover.

Her hands shook so badly that the first four matches snapped.

The fifth produced a flame.

Grace placed Lily inside her open coat near the stove.

The baby’s lips were pale.

Her breathing was shallow.

Grace rubbed Lily’s back and whispered every promise she could think of.

“I’ll show you the ocean.”

“You’ll meet your great-grandmother’s horses.”

“You’ll grow up knowing none of this was your fault.”

Near dawn, someone began pounding on the cabin door.

Grace grabbed a piece of firewood as a weapon.

“State rescue!” a man shouted. “Is anyone inside?”

A county snowplow driver named Owen Brooks had found the message relayed through emergency dispatch.

He knew the old logging paths better than the official rescue teams.

He reached the cabin before the ambulances could reach Northcrest.

Owen wrapped Lily in a heated emergency blanket and carried both mother and child to his plow.

At the hospital, Lily was treated for hypothermia and dehydration.

Grace had frostbite in two fingers, a fractured wrist, and dangerous exhaustion.

Both survived.

Detective Reed placed an officer outside the room.

He instructed the hospital to register Grace under a protected identity.

Ethan arrived six hours later.

He told staff his wife and daughter were missing.

He cried in the lobby.

He begged to search the pediatric wing.

The officer watched him through a security camera.

Ethan did not know Grace was one floor above him.

When Reed questioned him, Ethan presented the staged messages and claimed Grace had driven away during a postpartum episode.

Her SUV was found near the ridge.

Search teams discovered tire tracks ending beside a steep ravine.

No bodies were found.

Ethan publicly offered a reward.

Privately, he began preparing to claim Northcrest Estate.

Grace watched his televised appeal from her hospital bed.

“My wife may be confused and frightened,” he told reporters. “I just want Grace and Lily home.”

Grace turned off the screen.

“He knows we’re alive,” she whispered.

Reed shook his head.

May you like

“No. He hopes you aren’t.”

👉 Grace survived the storm, but Detective Reed asked her to remain hidden while Ethan proved what he planned to steal after her “death.”
