Chapter 8 - The Tray of Unmarked Pills
Natalie’s hand tightened around the tray when she saw Ethan.
Water trembled inside the plastic cup.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were coming home?”
Ethan stood between her and Ruth.
“Why is my mother locked in the basement?”
“She became dangerous.”
“To whom?”
“To herself.”
Ruth tried to speak.
Ethan knelt and adjusted the blanket around her.
Natalie watched him notice the bruises.
“She fell.”
“There are marks around her wrists.”
“She had to be restrained during an episode.”
“By you?”
“Under medical guidance.”
Ethan pointed toward the pills.
“What are those?”
“Her prescription.”
“Where is the bottle?”
Natalie had no answer.
Ethan lifted his phone.
The basement camera’s recording played through the speaker.
Natalie’s own voice filled the room.
Once you enter the hospital, no one will listen to anything you say.
Natalie’s face emptied.
“You were spying on me?”
“I was protecting my house.”
“This is my house too.”
“Not after today.”
Natalie reached into her pocket.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Take your hand out slowly.”
She froze.
He was not armed, but his voice carried the controlled authority of someone trained not to panic.
Natalie removed Ruth’s phone.
“I was keeping it safe.”
“You told me she lost it.”
“She kept trying to call people who upset her.”
The sound of vehicles reached the driveway.
Natalie looked toward the stairs.
Detective Torres appeared on Ethan’s video call.
“Officers are at the front door.”
Natalie turned and ran upstairs.
Ethan remained with Ruth.
He did not chase her.
Two uniformed officers entered through the kitchen and intercepted Natalie near the back exit.
Heather, who had been sleeping in the guest room, attempted to leave through the garage.
Another officer stopped her.
Paramedics rushed to the basement.
Ruth cried when they placed her on a stretcher.
“Don’t let them take me to his hospital.”
Ethan held her hand.
“You’re going to a regular emergency room.”
Natalie shouted from upstairs.
“She is mentally ill! You cannot trust what she says!”
Detective Torres arrived minutes later.
She collected the unmarked pills, the forged documents, and the basement camera.
Then Ethan’s phone displayed a new bank alert.
A transfer request for $2.7 million had been initiated from Ruth’s trust to an account in the Cayman Islands.
The request carried Ruth’s digital authorization.
