Chapter 14 - The Marriage Harlan Helped Arrange

Ethan met Natalie at a charity event for military families five years earlier.

She was warm, confident, and attentive.

She understood deployments.

She never complained about long absences.

Ethan believed he had found someone who respected his service.

Harlan’s laptop told a different story.

Months before the charity event, Natalie had purchased access to private donor information through a corrupt employee.

The list included military families with elderly parents, significant property, and limited nearby relatives.

Ethan’s name appeared beside Ruth’s.

Only son.

Frequently deployed.

Widowed mother.

Real estate holdings likely substantial.

Natalie had attended the charity event because she knew Ethan would be there.

Their first meeting was not accidental.

At first, Harlan expected Natalie to build trust and collect information.

But Ethan and Natalie began a genuine relationship.

She delayed the plan.

She married him.

For several years, she did not target Ruth.

Maya believed Natalie may have cared about Ethan in her own way.

Then Harlan’s network lost money after one family contested a guardianship case.

Natalie owed him.

When she discovered the full value of Ruth’s trust, she returned to the original purpose.

Ethan sat alone after reading the messages.

He remembered proposing beside the lake.

He remembered Natalie crying at the wedding.

He remembered her promising Ruth that she would love Ethan through every deployment.

Some moments may have been real.

But the beginning had been engineered.

Ruth found him in the hospital chapel.

She walked slowly with a nurse beside her.

Ethan immediately stood.

“You shouldn’t be out of bed.”

“I needed to find my son.”

He helped her sit.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“For what?”

“I brought her into our lives.”

“You loved someone. That is not a crime.”

“I should have seen it.”

“She trained herself to make sure you didn’t.”

Ethan looked at his mother.

“How can you be comforting me after what they did to you?”

“Because I’m still your mother.”

Ruth placed her hand over his.

“But do not mistake forgiveness for permission. She must answer for every choice.”

Ethan nodded.

He filed for divorce that afternoon.

Then Maya called.

Natalie had offered to testify against Harlan in exchange for a reduced sentence.

She claimed she could identify every person in the network.

But she wanted one condition.

May you like

She wanted Ethan to visit her first.

👉 Natalie had lost control of Ruth’s estate and her freedom, but she still believed she could use Ethan’s feelings to negotiate one final escape.
