Chapter 2 - Six Weeks Before the Basement

Six weeks earlier, Ruth Walker had been living independently in a small brick house outside Columbus, Georgia.
She tended roses every morning.
She attended church on Sundays.
She managed her bills without assistance.
Her knees had weakened with age, but her mind remained sharp.
When Ethan received orders for an extended overseas rotation, Ruth insisted he should not worry about her.
“I raised a soldier,” she told him. “I can manage a few months without one.”
Natalie offered a different solution.
“Let her stay with us while you’re gone.”
Ethan was surprised.
Natalie and Ruth had never been especially close.
They were polite at holidays, but warmth between them always seemed forced.
Natalie claimed she wanted to change that.
“She’s family,” she said. “And you’ll sleep better knowing she isn’t alone.”
Ruth initially refused.
Her own home was comfortable.
Her attorney, Claire Donovan, lived only twenty minutes away.
Her neighbor checked on her every afternoon.
But Ethan worried about Ruth’s recent fall on the porch.
Finally, she agreed to stay at Ethan and Natalie’s lakeside house for one month.
The first week was peaceful.
Natalie prepared Ruth’s favorite tea.
She drove her to medical appointments.
She sent Ethan photographs of the two of them smiling on the back deck.
Ethan called from overseas every evening.
Ruth told him Natalie was taking good care of her.
What Ethan did not know was that Natalie had already searched Ruth’s bedroom.
She photographed bank statements.
She copied the key to Ruth’s document box.
She found records showing that Ruth owned more than her modest house suggested.
Ruth’s late husband had invested carefully for decades.
She controlled rental properties, agricultural land, and a family trust worth nearly twelve million dollars.
Ethan knew about the trust.
Natalie did not.
At least, not until she opened Ruth’s files.
That night, Natalie called a man saved in her phone as Dr. Harlan.
“I found the records,” she whispered.
“How much?”
“More than we expected.”
The doctor paused.
“Then we use the full process.”
Natalie looked toward Ruth’s guest room.
“What if she refuses?”
May you like
“She won’t have the legal capacity to refuse for long.”
👉 Natalie had invited Ruth into her home as an act of kindness, but the invitation was actually the first step in a plan designed long before Ethan deployed.
