Chapter 4 - The Report Sent to Ethan
Three days after Ruth’s appointment, Ethan received an email from Natalie.
The subject line read:
Your Mom Had an Episode.
Natalie claimed Ruth had wandered outside at night and accused neighbors of stealing.
She said Dr. Harlan suspected early dementia.
Attached was a short medical summary.
Ethan read it twice.
The words did not sound like his mother.
Ruth forgot names occasionally.
She misplaced her glasses.
But she had never wandered.
She still handled complex property leases and remembered every birthday in the family.
Ethan tried calling her.
Natalie answered instead.
“Your mom is asleep.”
“At three in the afternoon?”
“She was upset all night.”
“Let me see her.”
Natalie switched to video.
Ruth was lying in the guest bed.
Her eyes were half closed.
She seemed unable to focus.
“Mom?”
Ruth tried to lift her head.
Natalie adjusted the camera.
“She took something to help her rest.”
“What did she take?”
“Whatever the doctor prescribed.”
Ethan’s unease grew.
“Put her regular physician on the phone.”
“Ethan, you’re overseas. I am the one handling this.”
“That doesn’t answer me.”
Natalie began crying.
She said he did not understand how difficult Ruth had become.
She claimed Ruth screamed at her, refused medication, and attempted to leave the house at night.
Ethan felt guilty.
He was serving far away while his wife carried a burden he could not see.
He apologized.
Natalie softened immediately.
“I love you. I’m doing this for us.”
After the call, Ethan contacted Ruth’s longtime attorney, Claire Donovan.
Claire sounded surprised.
“Ruth has never told me she was having memory problems.”
“Have you spoken to her recently?”
“I’ve called three times. Natalie says she’s resting.”
Claire promised to visit.
When she arrived at the lakeside house the following morning, no one answered.
Natalie later texted that she had taken Ruth to a specialist in Atlanta.
Claire requested the specialist’s information.
Natalie did not respond.
That same afternoon, Dr. Harlan completed another document.
It stated that Ruth suffered from severe delusions and could no longer manage financial decisions.
Beneath his signature was a recommendation for emergency guardianship.
