Police searched Evergreen Behavioral Residence.
The public rooms looked clean and professional.
Private hallways told a different story.
Several doors locked from the outside.
Cameras watched patients inside bedrooms.
Medication logs contained missing pages.
Personal phones were stored in a safe labeled FAMILY RESTRICTIONS.
In the basement archive, investigators discovered files identified only by numbers.
No patient names appeared on the covers.
Maya opened File 14.
Inside were property deeds, psychiatric reports, and a photograph of Evelyn Price, the widow who had died after accusing Harlan of fraud.
File 19 belonged to Samuel Knox.
File 23 contained Ruth’s information.
Harlan had created her file before Natalie invited her to the lakeside house.
That proved the scheme was planned in advance.
The file included photographs of Ruth’s home, vehicle, bank, church, and attorney’s office.
Someone had watched her for weeks.
A checklist appeared on the final page.
Target isolated.
Phone access restricted.
Medication initiated.
Behavioral incident recorded.
Emergency commitment prepared.
Financial authority pending.
Beside the final item, Natalie had handwritten:
Ethan returns in twelve weeks. Finish before then.
Maya photographed the note.
In another locked cabinet, officers found identification documents belonging to seven elderly people.
Three were currently inside Evergreen.
Two had died.
One was living in a facility under a court-appointed guardian.
The seventh person, Clara Hayes, was missing.
Her file showed that she owned mineral rights in Texas valued at nearly nine million dollars.
A transfer had recently moved those rights into a company controlled by Harlan.
Maya realized the doctor was not simply fleeing.
He might be taking Clara with him.
A statewide alert was issued.
Ethan wanted to help search.
Maya refused.
“Your place is with your mother.”
“I’m trained.”
“You are also a witness and a son whose mother nearly died.”
Ethan returned to Ruth’s room.
She was stronger but still afraid of sleeping.
Every time a nurse entered with medication, Ruth asked to see the label.
No one rushed her.
No one called her difficult.
Ethan read each bottle aloud.
Later, Claire Donovan arrived with emergency court orders freezing Ruth’s trust and all properties connected to Harlan, Natalie, and Evergreen.
“We stopped every known transfer,” Claire said.
“Known?” Ruth asked.
Claire hesitated.
One property had already changed ownership.
