Chapter 3 - The Doctor Ruth Never Chose

Two days later, Natalie told Ruth she had scheduled a routine appointment.

“Ethan worries about your fall,” she explained. “This will help him relax.”

Ruth expected a physical therapist.

Instead, Natalie drove her to the private office of Dr. Marcus Harlan, a psychiatrist whose name Ruth had never heard.

The waiting room was nearly empty.

There was no receptionist at the front desk.

Dr. Harlan greeted Natalie by her first name.

Ruth noticed.

“You two know each other?”

“We met through a veterans’ family support group,” Natalie answered quickly.

Inside the office, Dr. Harlan asked Ruth strange questions.

Did she ever misplace objects?

Did she become suspicious of relatives?

Did she believe anyone wanted her money?

Ruth stared at him.

“I didn’t until you asked that question.”

He smiled without humor.

“Paranoia can present as confidence.”

Ruth stood.

“This appointment is over.”

Natalie blocked the door.

“Please cooperate. Ethan asked us to do this.”

“My son would have called me himself.”

“He’s in a restricted area.”

Ruth demanded her phone.

Natalie said she had left it in the car.

Dr. Harlan placed a form on the desk.

It authorized further evaluation and medication management.

Ruth pushed it away.

“I am not signing that.”

On the drive home, Natalie said nothing.

That evening, Ethan called.

The connection was poor.

Natalie stayed close enough to hear every word.

Ruth tried to mention the psychiatrist.

Before she could explain, Natalie disconnected the call.

“Bad signal,” she said.

Ethan called again.

Natalie turned Ruth’s phone off.

The next morning, Ruth discovered that her purse had been moved.

Her checkbook was missing.

So was the spare key to her own house.

Natalie appeared in the doorway carrying coffee.

“You’ve been losing things lately.”

“I did not lose them.”

“Dr. Harlan said this might happen.”

Ruth looked at her daughter-in-law.

“I want to go home.”

Natalie’s smile remained calm.

“Of course.”

But when Ruth tried the front door, the deadbolt had been changed to a keypad.

She did not know the code.

👉 Ruth thought Natalie was becoming controlling, but she still did not know that Dr. Harlan had already written the first report declaring her mentally unstable.
