Chapter 5 - The First Missing Signature
Natalie brought Ruth a stack of documents after dinner.
Ruth had been given pills with her tea.
Her thoughts felt slow, but she could still read the title on the first page.
Durable Financial Power of Attorney.
“No.”
Natalie placed a pen beside her hand.
“This will let me pay your bills.”
“My attorney pays anything I cannot handle.”
“Claire is no longer involved.”
Ruth tried to stand.
The room tilted.
Natalie caught her elbow.
“You see? You can barely sit up.”
“Because you drugged me.”
Natalie tightened her grip.
“You are becoming paranoid.”
Ruth pulled away.
The pen rolled to the floor.
Natalie’s expression changed.
The friendly voice disappeared.
“Ethan is risking his life for this country, and you are making his marriage impossible.”
“My son would never ask you to take my property.”
“He already has enough to worry about.”
Natalie gathered the papers.
“You will sign eventually.”
The next morning, Ruth searched for a way out.
The keypad locked every exterior door.
The windows had sensors.
Her phone was gone.
Natalie had disconnected the landline.
Ruth found an old tablet in the den and attempted to email Claire.
Before the message sent, Heather Harlan entered the room.
She was Dr. Harlan’s younger sister and Natalie’s longtime friend.
Ruth had seen her at family gatherings but never knew her connection to the doctor.
Heather removed the tablet.
“You should be resting.”
“Let me leave.”
“Natalie says you’re not safe alone.”
“I am not alone. I am being held.”
Heather smiled.
“That is exactly the kind of statement Dr. Harlan described.”
Ruth understood the trap.
Every protest became evidence of confusion.
Every attempt to leave became proof that she was unstable.
That evening, Natalie moved Ruth from the guest suite to the basement.
She claimed it was temporary because workers were repairing a water leak upstairs.
There were no workers.
The basement door locked from the outside.
On the mattress waited another document.
This one authorized the sale of Ruth’s rental properties.
Her signature was already printed at the bottom.
