Chapter 6 - The Camera Ethan Forgot About
Three years earlier, Ethan had installed a home-security system after a series of neighborhood break-ins.
Most of the cameras were obvious.
One faced the driveway.
Another covered the back deck.
A third watched the upstairs hallway.
But Ethan had also hidden a small maintenance camera near the basement utility panel.
He used it to monitor a water heater that had repeatedly leaked while he was away for training.
Natalie knew about the main security system.
She disabled it soon after Ethan deployed.
She did not know the basement camera operated on a separate backup connection.
At first, Ethan did not check it.
Then an automated moisture alert reached his military email.
He opened the security application during a late-night break.
The image was dark.
He could barely make out the mattress.
Then someone moved.
His mother sat up beneath the old blanket.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Ruth was supposed to be in Atlanta receiving treatment.
Instead, she was locked in his basement.
He activated the audio.
Natalie’s voice came through the speaker.
“You will sign tomorrow.”
Ruth sounded weak.
“I want my son.”
“Your son believes you’re losing your mind.”
“He knows me.”
“He knows what I tell him.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
Natalie continued.
“Once you enter the hospital, no one will listen to anything you say.”
A tray struck the floor.
Ruth cried out.
Ethan immediately began recording the feed.
He contacted his commanding officer and explained that his mother might be in immediate danger.
Because the matter involved suspected abuse and an urgent family emergency, Ethan was granted emergency leave.
He was instructed not to confront Natalie alone and to notify local law enforcement.
But Ethan needed proof before Natalie learned he was coming.
He called Detective Maya Torres in Georgia.
Maya listened to the recording.
“Do not alert your wife,” she warned. “Send every file you have.”
Ethan forwarded the video.
Maya began checking Dr. Marcus Harlan’s name.
Within an hour, she found three previous complaints.
All involved elderly patients.
All involved sudden psychiatric commitments.
And in every case, property had changed hands shortly afterward.
Ethan boarded the first available military transport toward the United States.
He told no one except his commander and Detective Torres.
