Chapter 12 - The House Where Ruth Raised Ethan
Ruth’s childhood home stood on twelve acres outside Macon.
Her father built it after returning from Korea.
Ruth raised Ethan there after her husband died.
The porch still carried marks from Ethan’s bicycle.
A height chart remained inside the kitchen pantry.
Ruth had placed the property in a protected family trust.
She planned to leave it to Ethan.
Natalie had forged Ruth’s signature on a deed transferring the house to a company named Harbor Lane Investments.
The company then sold it to an out-of-state buyer for less than half its value.
Money from the sale moved through three accounts before reaching Harlan’s network.
Ruth closed her eyes when Claire explained.
“I promised Ethan that house would stay in the family.”
Ethan sat beside her.
“Mom, a house is not more important than you.”
“It was your father’s last project.”
“We’ll fight for it.”
The buyer claimed he had purchased the property legally.
But Claire discovered Harbor Lane Investments was formed by Heather.
Heather insisted Natalie ordered her to do it.
Natalie’s attorney claimed Ruth knowingly approved the sale.
The forged deed had a notary seal.
The notary was dead.
He had passed away six months before the document’s supposed signing date.
That made the fraud obvious.
But recovering the property would still require court action.
The new buyer had already hired contractors.
Trees had been marked for removal.
The kitchen was scheduled for demolition.
Ethan drove to the property.
He found workers unloading equipment.
He presented the emergency court order and stopped construction.
Then he walked through the empty rooms.
Furniture had been removed.
Family photographs were gone.
The pantry door with his childhood height marks had been taken off its hinges and placed in a trash pile.
Ethan carried it into his truck.
Under the final pencil line, his mother had written:
Ethan, age 17. Taller than his father.
He sat in the driver’s seat and cried for the first time since returning.
Maya called before he left.
Police had located Dr. Harlan’s vehicle near a private airfield.
The doctor was not inside.
But officers found Clara Hayes’s blood pressure medication and a handwritten flight schedule.
A charter plane had departed forty minutes earlier.
