Chapter 10 - The Doctor’s Private Facility

Dr. Harlan did not work alone.

His private psychiatric center, Evergreen Behavioral Residence, specialized in “high-risk geriatric stabilization.”

Families paid thousands of dollars a week.

Patients entered under emergency psychiatric orders.

Once inside, many were heavily medicated and denied unsupervised contact with attorneys or relatives.

Harlan then prepared evaluations supporting guardianship petitions.

The proposed guardians often had financial relationships with Harlan.

Natalie’s name appeared in Evergreen’s administrative records.

She was listed as a private family consultant.

Ethan had never heard of the position.

Maya found payments from Evergreen to Natalie totaling $186,000 over three years.

When investigators questioned Natalie, she claimed she recruited clients.

“What kind of clients?” Maya asked.

“Families dealing with difficult elderly relatives.”

“Families who wanted their relatives’ money?”

Natalie requested an attorney.

Heather talked.

She explained that Natalie met Dr. Harlan through a financial-planning seminar.

Harlan identified wealthy older people whose families were willing to seek guardianship.

Natalie helped gather personal information, isolate the target, and create evidence of instability.

In exchange, she received a percentage of the assets later moved through Harlan’s companies.

Ruth was different.

She was not a stranger.

She was Natalie’s mother-in-law.

Heather insisted Natalie hesitated at first.

Then she discovered the trust was worth nearly twelve million dollars.

Harlan promised the case would be easy because Ethan was deployed.

He would appear unable to provide care.

Natalie could present herself as the overwhelmed wife who had tried everything.

The psychiatric transfer scheduled for that morning would have placed Ruth inside Evergreen.

Once admitted, Ruth’s communications would be controlled.

Dr. Harlan planned to declare her incapable of managing her affairs.

Natalie would receive temporary authority.

The offshore transfer would move part of the money immediately.

The properties would be sold over the following months.

By the time Ethan returned, legal records would describe Ruth as severely impaired.

Any accusation she made would sound like a symptom.

Ethan stood outside Ruth’s hospital room after hearing Heather’s statement.

He felt sick.

His marriage had not merely hidden a crime.

Natalie had used his service, his trust, and his absence as tools.

Then Maya received an urgent message.

Dr. Harlan had closed Evergreen and left the property.

Several patient rooms were empty.

One elderly resident had been found locked inside without staff.

👉 Harlan knew Natalie had been exposed, and he was now trying to erase the patients and records that connected him to the larger scheme.
